BMI & IVF

I see so many people talking about BMI when it comes to IVF and the whole surely they can’t be that strict.

Now most people know that BMI isn’t the best measure of a person, but regardless BMI is a constant thing that you have to achieve for IVF treatment in the majority of UK clincs.

If you are lucky to get IVF on the NHS then they require your BMI to be under 30. Most of the time they will want this to be 29.9 or even less. Some clinic protocols are that your partner should have the BMI the same but this seems to be CCG based.

For private clinics most want your BMI to be under 35 some clinics do not follow this hard and fast rule but a lot of clinics do.

I’ve seen people comment saying “My BMI is just over 35 do you think they let me go ahead?” and unfortunately, it is clinic dependant. Those clinics that know your weight from the beginning tend to weigh you on a regular basis, some have to weigh you to sign you off, and then don’t weigh you again.

For me, for cycle two, I went to get weighed and my BMI was 35.2….

Now they weighed me in an afternoon, and we all know that this makes you a more however, I had to go back to the clinic the week later to be weighed again and then my BMI was 34.4 – and I was signed off. They would not sign me off at 35.2…

So if people are wondering whether or not most clinics I really strict with BMI actually they are are even though most of them don’t agree with it.
