My CMV Status…

I am CMV Negative

It’s taken me longer than usual to get my CMV results back. If anyone is going to be awkward it is generally going to be me.

My first CMV bloods arrived back within 5 days of them being taken, but came back as indeterminate. The nurses at the clinic said that its something that they don’t often see, I could have a repeat of the bloods, or I could take it that I was CMV negative, and use a CMV Negative sperm donor.

I decided to have them re-done, with the thought that if it came back indeterminate again, I would just take it as negative and have done with it.

So on the Friday after I’d had my bloods done, I called the clinic, and no results were back – call Monday. On Monday, still no results back but they’d chase it with the Lab, and then Tuesday came and…then the phone call came – we’ve sent your bloods to the Newcastle Lab for further testing because the tests they do here came back with an indeterminate result again…

I was then told it may take another week for them to return but hopefully they’ll be back at the beginning of the week and the donor nurse would chase them up when she was in on Monday – and they’ve finally come back today.

And so here we are, with my actual results are back.

I always thought that I would be CMV positive, especially after I did research about CMV and that 80% of people contract the virus in childhood, add on to this that I’ve worked in a nursery and for the last 11 years I’ve worked with children majority from 0-5 – so I am super surprised that my CMV status has come back as negative.

Now Its back it means…I can start to look into donors – and I have the choice of both just CMV Negative Donors. Wish me luck!

  1. I’m CMV negative too! I spoke to my consultant and European Sperm Bank and they advised me that it was such a tiny risk that I shouldn’t really worry about it. My donor is actually CMV positive. I figured that in normal circumstances you would have no idea if your partner was CMV negative or positive so just went with my preferred donor in the end.

  2. Oh I know! But in reality I will just go with it! 🙂 it helps narrow down my choice anyway by only looking at negative donors! 🙂 Theres 9 on ESB – and only 1 at LSB – im looking around 2-4 different sperm banks for my clinic so im still going to have plenty to choose from! Xx
