Starting the IVF process, there is a whole host of another language to learn. Theres so much terminology, but when you’ve got the acronyms for the basics its like literally a brand new stream of new terms to learn.
So, here’s a guide to commonly used abbreviations that often appear in TTC forums – That’s Trying to Conceive, btw. And, fair warning, for the non-medical terms you might find that abbreviations and/or definitions vary.

| AF | Aunt Flo another name for Period / Menstral Cycle |
| AH | Assisted Hatching (an additional IVF Procedure) |
| AI | Artificial Insemination mainly done at home |
| Baby Dust | A bit like “Fairy Dust” sent with baby wishes |
| BBT | Basal Body Temperature |
| BD | Baby Dance (sex) |
| Beta | HCG Level Blood Test |
| BFN | Big Fat Negative / Negative Pregnancy Test |
| BFP | Big Fat Positive / Positive Pregnancy Test |
| C# | Cycle Number since TTC whether naturally or not |
| CB | Cycle Buddy – someone going through a cycle same time as you |
| CD | Cycle Day. Day 1 is the first day of AF |
| Clomid | Medication to jump start ovulation |
| CM | Cervical Mucus |
| CMV | Cytomegalovirus |
| CP | Chemical Pregnancy |
| DE | Donor Eggs |
| DPO | Days Past Ovulation |
| DS | Donor Sperm |
| ED | Egg donation |
| EDD | Estimated Due Date |
| Endo | Endometriosis |
| ET | Embryo Transer |
| FET | Frozen Embryo Transfer |
| FMU | First Morning Urine |
| FP | Follicular Phase |
| FRER | First Response Early Response brand of Pregnancy Test |
| Frostie | Frozen Embryo |
| FSH | Follicle Stimulating Hormone |
| GnRH | Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone |
| HCG | Human Chorionic Gonadotropin |
| HPT | Home Pregnancy Test |
| HSC | Hysteroscopy |

| LH | Luteinising Hormone |
| Line Eyes | A request for people to look at a picture of a pregnancy test and say whether or not they think it’s positive |
| LMP | Last Menstrual Period |
| LP | Luteal Phase |
| MC | Miscarraige |
| MF | Male Factor Infertility |
| NK | Natural Killer Cells |
| OHSS | Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome |
| OPK | Ovulation Prediction Kits |
| OTD | Official Test Date |
| OV | Ovulation |
| PCOS | Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome |
| PDG | Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (where embryos are tested for genetic conditions before implantation) |
| PGS | Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (where embryos are tested to make sure they have a healthy number of chromosomes before implantation) |
| PNV | Prenatal Vitamins |
| POAS | Pee On A Stick (pregnancy test) |
| POF | Premature Ovarian Failure |
| PUL | Pregnancy of Unknown Location |
| PUPO | Pregnant Until Proven Otherwise |
| Rainbow Baby | Baby born after a loss |
| SA | Semen Analysis |
| SMBC | Single Mum By Choice |
| SM | Surrogate Mum |
| Stims | Stimulating Hormones, usually referring to injectable fertility drugs |
| Trigger | HCG shot given to induce ovulation |
| TSH | Thyroid Stimulating Hormone |
| TTC | Trying To Conceive |
| TWW | Two Week Wait |
